AI SEARCH

How to get your business found in AI search

Aug 24, 2026 · ~7 min read · Meghann

When someone asks ChatGPT, Google's AI features, or Perplexity for a business like yours, the answer may surface a small set of names before the customer visits a single company website. To have a chance of appearing, you need three things: a clear identity the system can understand, content that answers real questions cleanly, and enough credible information beyond your own claims to support the recommendation. Here is how each part works, what the current evidence actually shows, and where to start.

/ THE SHORTLIST CAN FORM BEFORE ANYONE VISITS YOUR SITE

Search is no longer only a page of links people scan and weigh for themselves. Answers, maps, snippets, reviews, AI summaries, and recommendations can all shape the shortlist before a customer reaches a homepage. Two recent datasets show that shift from different angles.

In a Pew Research Center analysis of browsing activity from March 2025, around two-thirds of Google searches ended without a click to a result. When an AI summary appeared, users clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits, compared with 15% when no AI summary appeared. A link cited inside the AI summary received a click in 1% of visits.

For local discovery, BrightLocal's 2026 survey of 1,002 U.S. adults found that 45% had used an AI tool for a local business recommendation, up from 6% in its previous survey.

Those figures do not mean that half of all local searches now happen in chatbots, or that AI summaries eliminate website visits. They measure different behaviors. What they do show is that discovery and comparison increasingly happen inside the search or answer interface itself.

The practical version: if your business is absent or described incorrectly there, you may never make the customer's early shortlist.

/ THERE ISN'T ONE "AI SEARCH" TO OPTIMIZE FOR

The major products do not all retrieve, rank, and assemble web information in the same way, and those systems continue to change.

Google says a page must be indexed and eligible for a normal Google Search snippet to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode; there are no extra technical requirements unique to those features. Microsoft says Copilot may use Bing when it needs public web information. OpenAI says ChatGPT Search sometimes works with external search providers, and it also operates OAI-SearchBot for search visibility. Perplexity and Anthropic publish controls for their own search-focused crawlers, PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot.

That is why tidy equations such as "ChatGPT equals Bing" or "Claude equals Brave" are not a durable optimization strategy.

You cannot hand-tune a local business site for every answer system. What you can do is get the shared fundamentals right: make the business unambiguous, publish useful evidence, keep important content crawlable, and earn credible references beyond your own website.

/ START BY ASKING THE QUESTIONS YOUR CUSTOMERS ASK

Before changing anything, establish a baseline. Write down ten questions a customer asks while deciding whether to hire or buy from you. Test each one in the products your audience is most likely to use. For a local business, include the real city or service area in the prompt.

For every answer, record:

  • Whether your business was named
  • Whether the description was accurate
  • Which competitors appeared
  • Which sources were cited
  • The date, product, prompt, and location used

Use the same wording when you repeat the test. Results can change by product, date, location, account context, and phrasing, so this is not a universal ranking report. It is a controlled snapshot of what a prospective customer could see.

/ GET YOUR IDENTITY STRAIGHT

Search and answer systems have a much easier job when the basic facts about a business are accurate and recognizably consistent.

Use the real business name across the website, Google Business Profile, major directories, and important third-party profiles. Keep the address or service area, phone number, hours, category, and website current. For local businesses, maintain the Google Business Profile rather than treating it as a one-time listing; Google's own guidance for AI search recommends keeping Business Profile information up to date.

Add appropriate Organization or LocalBusiness structured data to the site when it accurately reflects information visible on the page. Structured data can help search systems understand and disambiguate a business, but it is not a special AI-ranking switch. Google explicitly says there is no unique AI schema or machine-readable file required for AI Overviews or AI Mode.

And do not pad the Google Business Profile name with phrases such as "best," "affordable," or a list of services. Google requires the profile name to reflect the real-world business name and warns that unnecessary additions can result in suspension.

/ WRITE ANSWERS, NOT JUST PAGES

Give each important question a clear place to land.

Lead with a direct, self-contained answer, then explain it. Use headings that reflect how customers actually ask. Make the page specific enough to be useful without forcing the reader, or a retrieval system, to assemble the answer from five vague sections.

An FAQ can help when the questions are genuine and the answers add value, but the visible content matters more than attaching an "AI-friendly" label to it. Google says no special structured data is required for its AI features, and FAQ rich results are now generally limited to authoritative government and health sites.

Specific evidence gives a page more substance: original data, named examples, credible quotations, and properly cited sources where they genuinely support the point. A 2024 KDD paper on Generative Engine Optimization found that adding relevant citations, quotations, and statistics improved source visibility in its generative-engine benchmarks, although the effect varied by query, domain, and measurement method. That is promising evidence, not a guarantee that adding one statistic will produce a citation.

This is the same discipline behind every site we build. On Haven, rebuilding the content so each service and each family's question had a clear, findable home was half the project.

/ EARN CREDIBLE MENTIONS BEYOND YOUR OWN WEBSITE

Your own page can establish what you do. Other sources help corroborate it.

Depending on the query and product, an answer may draw from search results, directories, publications, review platforms, professional sources, community sites, or other pages that mention the business. No major engine publishes one universal checklist of outside signals, so avoid anyone promising a fixed number of citations or directory listings that will "unlock" AI recommendations.

The useful principle is simpler: make sure the wider web reflects the same real business customers encounter. Earn coverage and references where the audience already looks. Keep reputable directory profiles accurate. Encourage genuine reviews and respond to them. Give partners, associations, publications, and clients something specific and truthful to say about the work.

/ MAKE SURE THE MACHINES CAN ACTUALLY READ YOU

None of the editorial work helps if important content cannot be discovered, fetched, or understood.

Keep essential information in real page text rather than baking it into images. Use descriptive headings, crawlable links, useful alt text, and structured data that matches what visitors can see. Give every important service or article a direct URL. Do not make core content exist only after a click, inside an app state, or in a page that cannot be loaded directly.

Google can process many JavaScript sites, but not every search or answer crawler behaves identically. Rendering critical content into the page's HTML remains the safer cross-platform choice.

Check robots.txt and crawler access deliberately. Search visibility and model training are not the same control:

  • OpenAI uses OAI-SearchBot for search visibility and GPTBot for potential model training.
  • Anthropic distinguishes Claude-SearchBot, Claude-User, and the training-oriented ClaudeBot.
  • Perplexity says PerplexityBot is used to surface and link websites in search results, not to crawl for foundation-model training.

Allow the search crawlers you want without assuming that doing so requires opting into model training.

This is unglamorous, but decisive. The same discipline underpins the system we built for Wes Peoples Homes: accessible community and inventory pages, tracked conversion paths, clean analytics, and content search systems can actually find.

/ THEN MEASURE IT, ON REPEAT

There is still no single dashboard that covers every AI answer product, but measurement is better than it was.

Repeat the controlled prompt set monthly and record whether the business appears, how it is described, and which sources support the answer. Keep the phrasing, location, and test conditions as consistent as practical. Use the platform data that is available alongside that manual check:

  • Google's Generative AI performance report shows eligible Search Console properties how their pages appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google began rolling it out in June 2026, so it may not yet appear for every property.
  • ChatGPT referral links include utm_source=chatgpt.com, which makes visits from ChatGPT Search identifiable in analytics when a user clicks through.
  • Search Console, analytics, call tracking, forms, and CRM outcomes still matter. Being cited is useful only if the wider visibility supports a real business result.

Treat changes as a pattern, not a victory based on one answer on one afternoon.

THE TAKEAWAY

AI search does not replace the foundations of good search and good marketing. It raises the value of being clear, useful, technically accessible, and corroborated beyond your own claims.

Make the business easy to identify. Answer the questions customers actually ask. Publish evidence worth citing. Keep the site crawlable. Build a credible footprint beyond it. Then measure what changes.

That baseline test is a good hour's work and will tell you a lot. If you would rather see where you stand and what to fix first with someone who does this daily, that is part of what we build through Marketing & Growth. Start a conversation whenever you are ready.

FAQ

How do I know if AI is recommending my business?

Run a consistent set of customer questions through the products your audience uses and record whether you are named, described accurately, and supported by credible sources. Combine that manual testing with Google's generative-AI Search Console report, where available, and referral data in your analytics.

Is AI search different from normal SEO?

It builds on it. For Google's AI features, the page must already be indexed and eligible for a normal search snippet. Clear content, sound technical SEO, accurate local information, useful evidence, and credible outside references remain the foundation across platforms.

How long does it take to appear in AI answers?

There is no dependable universal timeline. Changes have to be crawled and indexed, and recommendation-style answers may also depend on third-party evidence that develops over time. Measure monthly rather than promising a result within a fixed number of weeks.
